ÒIn the second reading
today, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians, ÒThere are different gifts, but the
same Spirit; there are different ministries but the same Lord.Ó How am I using
my gifts Òfor the common goodÓ?
We must remember that violence breeds violence. When we, as a nation, tolerate unjust
attacks upon the tiniest innocents among us by abortion we accustom ourselves
to violence. And so we have
allowed these barbaric practices to corrupt our laws, our medical practice, and
even our ordinary livesÉthe inhumanity of abortion affects the lives of all of
us.

The CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF THE US have published
ÒFaithful CitizenshipÓ. This is a statement encouraging Catholics to become
informed on issues and candidates before voting. Following is a paragraph taken from this publication: WHAT DOES THE CHURCH SAY ABOUT
CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE? ÒThe Right to Life
and the Dignity of the Human PersonÓ
Human life is sacred.
Direct attacks on innocent human beings are never morally
acceptable. Within our society,
life is under direct attack from abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, and
destruction of human embryos for research. These intrinsic evils must always be opposed. This teaching also compels us as
Catholics to oppose genocide, torture, unjust war, and the use of the death
penalty, as well as to pursue peace and help overcome poverty, racism, and
other conditions that demean human life.
