Rock Island depot Restoration, Caboose, Model R.R. In Railroad Park
The Rock Island depot in Greene was built in the early 1870's. In 1988 the Iowa Northern Railroad gave the depot to the "Save the Depot" committee and it was moved to foundation on a donated site near the Historical Museum, where it has been restored as a railroad museum.

120 feet of track was laid and a CNW caboose has been placed on the track. The original brick platform has been replaced around the building.

Displays of railroad history, as well as other railroad memorabilia are displayed. Detailed HO gauge dioramas depict Greene in the late 1940's and a railroad accident in 1909. A working model railroad layout, the Rock Island Northern, named after the Rock Island and the Iowa Northern, the two railroads that have served the community has been constructed by the RIN Model Railroad Club.

Also displayed are several model railroad collections and toys. Railroad signals and signs are placed around the grounds, and landscaping of "Railroad Park" has been completed. A cement entry walk, memorial benches, a small truss bridge, flower gardens and twenty-five decorative and shade trees and shrubs have been added.

Stone House Gallery
The Stone House Gallery, a 100+ year old limestone home, is also a part of Railroad Park. It contains the workshop of the RIN and is the site of the Greene Visitor Information Center and the Spirit of Greene/Paddle Inn office.

Greene Historical Museum

The large two story "turn-of-the-century" house was donated by three townspeople to the Greene Historical Society in the fall of 1984 for the purpose of establishing a museum to preserve a record of the past. Hundreds of hours of work have been donate by volunteers to make repairs, and many historical items have been given to the museum. Renovation work continues, and the society often has special "theme" exhibits during the year. An Indian Room displays artifacts from the native American period of our history, and the garage houses a collection of antique tools.
