Iowa's One-Stop Department Store

While most small-town department stores have gone the way of the penny candy, Dralle's in Greene, Iowa (50 miles northwest of Waterloo), stands steadfast. The century old two-story brick store, operated by the third generation of Dralles, spans an entire block. It stocks everything-from fresh eggs, T-Bone steaks, picture frames and school supplies to vacuum cleaners, greeting cards and overalls. Even three floors of furniture, flooring and carpet add to the completeness of the store. Owner Jeff Dralle still lives by his grandfather's adage: "You can't sell from an empty wagon."
